The Home Depot Foundation Challenge Grant Final Report

We have spent the remainder of the challenge grant funds from The Home Depot Foundation on more tools and supplies for our growing team of veterans.

Here is the final report of what it has produced.

Purchased: In April of 2014 we used the grant on hand tools. bench grinder, hammer and drywall drills, framing, skill and chop saws ladders and personal protect equipment to address the work needed to be done on the Veterans Village after signing a 3 year lease to purchase 1300 sqft, 9 unit building zoned as transitional housing last month.

Veterans and Community Engagement:
7 of our veterans have given safety instruction on the tools use and managed the work of over 500 Motor City Blight Busters of Detroit's community volunteers.

Together they have worked on the Veteran's Village Housing, removing the carpet, linoleum tiles and the drywall from the ceiling and walls from the first floor. = 7000 sqft.

The tools were also used on Blight Buster's Farm City Detroit's Community Gardens and our Veterans USDA - FSA Urban Farm building raised beds and planting a apple and cherry tree orchard.

In a support of other city, community business district projects the tools purchased with your grant secured windows and cleaned the property around the abandoned 8th Precinct in District one of Detroit. across the street from a construction site of the first large scale grocery store in the neighborhood.

With the help of the community organizations and their volunteers made up of local youth, college students and the electrical union's Local 58, We have spent over 2000 hours in one month using your donation to improve the Old Redford District of Detroit.

Our Goals for the Future:

Completing the restoration of our veterans green housing and urban farm is our priority. Our partner Motor City Blight Busters of Detroit has secured $75k start up grant for labor and materials from Masco, INC for this project.

We have begone discussions with The Home Depot local volunteer coordinator regarding regional store support for The Veteran's Village Project.

We have a three year lease paid in full. If we have the building completed within those three years we gain 50% ownership of the building with current deed holder Motor City Blight Busters of Detroit.
